This post offers another reason why we need to learn and teach history. We are certainly on the trajectory of repeating the worst parts of our history. It is also understandable why Republicans and white Christian nationalists want to hide history.

John 3:19b

“...people preferred darkness to light because their deeds were evil."

Thank you for helping connect threats today with tragic historical events. When addiction to power and hate overwhelms reason, law and love, humanity suffers.

Thank you again for such an insightful historical piece. It caused me to reflect upon how "local control" can be not only frightening but also life-threatening for Black Americans and other racial and ethnic groups. Unjust local control is why the federal government and the courts stepped in to right these wrongs (though no one's life could be brought back, of course). Trump's administration wants local control on some things (e.g. dismantling the Dept. of Education) yet threatens federal consequences on other things (e.g., punishing universities, critics and law firms, and Maine for its governor's refusal to back down on DEI). Their real motivation is quite clear. And where I live in Indiana, the governor and his GOP legislature are out of control, radically upholding the kind of white supremacy so dominant here in the 1920s. Most important, of course, is the protection of the writ of habeas corpus; without it, the Trump administration's authoritarianism would be made complete. And then no one is safe, especially not critics of this administration! Praying for you and your work, Jemar. I know the risks you face are rea. May God bless the truth you tell, always in love.

Thanks for helping us connect the dots. Knowing our history helps us identify patterns and disrupt them, if we have the courage to.

The horrors of our racial history in this country are even more relevant today with the cruelty and lawlessness we are seeing in this regime. I am thankful that you keep us informed so that we can speak out against these injustices.

At this point I’m wondering how much power DT will even leave up to the courts. I’m afraid this (and frankly much of the rest of the presidency) will be another "John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it" situation.
